Washer, fridge and toilet lines
Small supply lines cause a big share of indoor floods because they fail quietly behind appliances.
Check these once a year
- Washing machine hoses: replace rubber hoses with braided stainless, and replace every 5 years or at the first sign of bulging.
- Refrigerator ice-maker line: thin plastic lines crack; braided lines last longer.
- Dishwasher: look under the front panel for drips and rust.
- Toilets and faucets: replace old plastic or corroded supply lines.
Going away for more than a few days? Turn off the washer valves, or the main water supply.
Leak-prevention picks
- Braided stainless washer hoses — Replace rubber hoses, a common cause of floods.
- Braided toilet & faucet supply lines — An inexpensive upgrade to old plastic lines.
- Water leak detectors — Place under sinks, by the water heater and behind the washer.
