Hard water and scale
Much of Southern California's water, including imported water, is hard. Calcium and magnesium leave white crust on fixtures and build scale inside water heaters and appliances.
Signs of hard water
- White crust on faucets, showerheads and glass doors
- Spots on dishes
- Popping water heater (scale on the bottom of the tank)
- Soap that doesn't lather well
Options
| Option | What it does | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Salt-based softener | Removes hardness minerals | Uses salt and discharges brine; some California communities restrict them, so check local rules first |
| Salt-free conditioner | Changes minerals to reduce scale buildup | Doesn't remove hardness; results vary |
| Point-of-use filters | Treats drinking or shower water | Doesn't protect water heaters or pipes |
Your water district's annual water quality report lists hardness for your area, and a home test kit confirms what's at your tap.
Leak-prevention picks
- Water test kit / TDS meter — Check hardness, chlorine and more at home.
- Whole-house sediment & carbon filter — Reduces sediment and chlorine at every tap.
- Under-sink reverse osmosis system — Filtered drinking water at the kitchen tap.
