Water filtration and reverse osmosis
The right filter depends on what you want to change: taste, specific contaminants, or scale throughout the house.
| Type | Best for | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher or faucet carbon filter | Chlorine taste and smell | Change cartridges as directed |
| Under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) | Very clean drinking and cooking water; reduces many dissolved minerals | Change pre-filters and membrane on schedule; RO sends some water down the drain |
| Whole-house sediment & carbon | Sediment and chlorine at every tap | Change cartridges regularly; doesn't soften water |
| Softener or conditioner | Scale from hard water | See the hard water guide |
Filter housings and RO lines can leak too. Put a leak detector under the sink when you install an RO system, and check fittings after every filter change.
Look for products certified to NSF/ANSI standards for the contaminants you want to reduce.
Leak-prevention picks
- Under-sink reverse osmosis system — Filtered drinking water at the kitchen tap.
- Whole-house sediment & carbon filter — Reduces sediment and chlorine at every tap.
- Water leak detectors — Place under sinks, by the water heater and behind the washer.
