Earthquake prep for your water
Southern California sits in earthquake country. A strong quake can topple an unstrapped water heater, break water and gas lines, and cut off your water supply.
Strap your water heater
California law requires water heaters to be braced, anchored or strapped to resist falling in an earthquake. Check that yours has two straps (upper and lower third of the tank) secured to the wall studs. A plumber can install or upgrade them.
Know your shutoffs
- Water: find your main shutoff and practice closing it (guide).
- Gas: only shut off gas if you smell gas or hear a leak; the utility must turn it back on.
- Electricity: know where your main breaker is.
Store emergency water
Emergency guidance commonly recommends storing at least one gallon per person per day for several days. Your water heater tank can also be an emergency source if it's strapped and intact.
Leak-prevention picks
- Water heater earthquake strap kit — California requires water heaters to be strapped.
- Emergency water storage — Keep drinking water on hand for outages and quakes.
- Water meter / curb valve key — Lets you close the valve at the meter box.
