Pool and spa leaks
In hot, dry summers, pools lose water to evaporation. A leak looks similar but costs much more and can soften soil around decks and foundations.
The bucket test
- Place a bucket on a pool step and fill it to match the pool's water level.
- Mark both water levels and turn off the autofill.
- After 24 hours, compare. If the pool dropped noticeably more than the bucket, there may be a leak.
Common leak spots
- Equipment pad: pump, filter and valve fittings
- Skimmers, returns and lights
- Cracks in plaster or tile lines
- Underground plumbing lines
Pool leak detection specialists can pinpoint underground leaks. If water has reached the house, a restoration company can dry walls and floors.
Leak-prevention picks
- Water leak detectors — Place under sinks, by the water heater and behind the washer.
- Moisture meter — Finds hidden dampness after a leak.
- Hose timer — Stops a forgotten hose from running all night.
