Slab leak signs and the water meter test
Most homes here sit on concrete slabs with water lines running underneath. A small leak below the slab can go unnoticed for weeks.
Warning signs
- A warm spot on a tile or wood floor (hot-water line)
- The sound of running water when everything is off
- A water bill that jumps without explanation
- Damp carpet, warped flooring or cracks with moisture
- Low water pressure or a water heater that runs constantly
The water meter test
- Turn off every faucet, appliance and the irrigation system.
- Find your meter (usually in a box near the curb) and note the reading or watch the small leak indicator.
- Wait 30–60 minutes without using any water.
- If the reading changed or the indicator moved, water is leaking somewhere.
A plumber with leak detection equipment can pinpoint the spot. If water has already damaged floors or walls, a restoration company handles drying and mold prevention.
Leak-prevention picks
- Moisture meter — Finds hidden dampness after a leak.
- Water leak detectors — Place under sinks, by the water heater and behind the washer.
- Water pressure gauge (hose bib) — Check your home's water pressure in seconds.
